Summary
Video game publisher EA has released the source code for several older Command & Conquer titles to a community of modders.
Additionally, the company has enabled Steam Workshop support for a string of C&C titles, allowing players to upload custom maps.
Those with the relevant skills will be able to access the source code for Command & Conquer (aka Tiberian Dawn) and C&C Red Alert, as well as the source code for the game’s engine, the SAGE engine, which is known as the “spiritual home of the RTS”, according to EA.
The move comes after the company commissioned a long-time member of the C&C community, Luke Feenan, to improve the C&C Ultimate Collection, which was launched last year on Steam.
The company said the release of the source code is intended to preserve the legacy of a series that has been kept alive by the passion and energy of its fans.
