Google makes Gemini Code Assist free with 180,000 code completions per month as AI-powered dev race heats up

Google’s DeepMind division has made its AI coding assistant, Gemini Code Assist, available for free to individuals and smaller companies, in a bid to democratise access to advanced tech.
The system can complete up to 180,000 code completions per month, compared with 2,000 completions per month offered by GitHub’s Copilot Free.
Amazon’s Q Developer Free Tier offers code suggestions and allows up to 1,000 lines of submitted code monthly, while Anthropic’s Claude Code charges 5to10 per day.
Google said AI coding aids are becoming essential for developers and should be accessible to all, regardless of funding.
The search giant said AI not only speeds up coding but also improves code quality through more efficient reviews, adding that the new offering builds on capabilities found in its October 2024 Gemini Code AssistEnterprise package.
