ChatGPT rockets to 700M weekly users ahead of GPT-5 launch with reasoning superpowers

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has reached 700 million users, the company has announced, marking a 40% increase on the 500 million users recorded at the end of March.
The news comes as OpenAI prepares for the launch of GPT-5, its most powerful language model to date, which is reportedly set to debut in early August.
The rapid growth of ChatGPT has seen OpenAI’s annual recurring revenue hit $13 bn, w i t h p ro j ec t i o n ss ugg es t in g t hi sco u l d re a c h$ 20bn by the end of the year.
The company’s success has also seen it attract more competition, with Google, Meta and Anthropic all launching AI products to rival ChatGPT and grab market share.
To maintain its advantage, OpenAI has committed to a $30 bnann u a ll e a se w i t h O r a c l e f or d a t a ce n t rec a p a c i t y, a s w e ll a ss t r ikin g a$ 11.9bn deal with CoreWeave and planning an international expansion through a partnership with Stargate Norway.
