Google DeepMind just changed hurricane forecasting forever with new AI model

Summary
Google’s DeepMind unit said it had developed an AI model that could accurately predict the path and intensity of tropical cyclones, a breakthrough that would offer significant advantages over current weather forecasting models.
DeepMind has partnered with the US National Hurricane Center, which will incorporate the AI predictions into its forecasts, making it the first time the centre has included AI forecasts in its workflow.
The AI model was trained on two datasets: reanalysis data on global weather patterns and a specialised database on cyclones covering the past 45 years, which included information on more than 4,700 cyclones.
Although DeepMind’s Weather Lab will remain a research tool, the breakthrough marks the operational deployment of AI weather systems, which could prove vital as climate change is expected to intensify cyclones.
