Summary
French start-up Mistral AI has released Mistral Code, an AI tool for software developers that allows its models to be run on customers’ hardware, in what the company terms an “unprecedented” level of customisation.
As well as code completion, the tool can search code, write new modules and execute shell commands.
The launch directly challenges establishedCoding assistants, such as Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot.
The company has made a name for itself by poaching top researchers from Meta’s AI team.
It has also had success among major companies in Spain and France, such as banks, railways and other organisations that have strict data security requirements.
