Mistral launches API for building AI agents that run Python, generate images, perform RAG and more

French AI start-up Mistral AI has introduced its Agents application programming interface (API), which allows third-party software developers to integrate autonomous generative AI into their operations, using Mistral’s proprietary Medium 3 model as the “brains” of each agent.
The new API offers numerous built-in connectors, such as web search and document library, as well as the ability to coordinate multiple agents to complete complex tasks, all with a “plug and play” ethos that offers near-limitless customisation.
Sophia Yang, Mistral’s head of developer relations, said the new release was designed to allow the creation of AI solutions that move beyond traditional text generation, and empower developers to use AI “in more practical and impactful ways”.
The proprietary nature of Mistral’s models and API has, however, drawn criticism for decreasing transparency and flexibility traditionally associated with open-source AI platforms.
