Neurotech companies are selling your brain data, senators warn
1 min read
Summary
Democrat senators in the US have written to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to express concerns about the neurotechnology industry’s practices regarding the handling and sharing of users’ neural data.
The letter calls for an investigation into neurotechnology companies, as well as the implementation of tighter regulations regarding their data policies.
Currently, there are few regulations for neurotech products that are aimed at wellness, despite the fact that some headsets can collect highly personal neurological data.
Such data can include information on mental health conditions, emotional states and cognitive patterns, even when anonymised.
The senators are suggesting that the FTC should enforce rules relating to consent, privacy standards and the handling of children’s data, as well as setting limitations on the use of AI and profiling.
