Summary
Apple will produce all four iPhone 17 variants in India at launch, according to Bloomberg, marking another step in the company’s plan to shift production away from China.
In response to rising tensions between the US and China, Apple has been looking to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing.
It had already been reported that Apple was planning to make a new iPhone model, the iPhone 16E, in India.
Currently, Apple’s exports of iPhones to the US from India are exempt from tariffs, despite the Trump administration’s 50% tariff on many Indian imports.
However, it is worth noting that Bloomberg suggests Apple’s move “does dodge some tariffs”, but also points out that iPhone subassemblies are still mostly produced in China before being shipped to India for final assembly.
