Education technology company Chegg has filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming its Search AI feature negatively affected the company’s revenue and traffic.
The feature, known as AI Overviews, uses Chegg’s proprietary information to generate search results, thus creating competition for the original owner of the content, argues Chegg.
As a result, the edtech firm is considering going private, as it is not likely to be profitable as a standalone company due to the “ever-increasing encroachment from Google”.
Commenting on the lawsuit, Google spokesperson José Castañeda said: “Every day, Google sends billions of clicks to sites across the web, and AI Overviews send traffic to a greater diversity of sites.”
It is thought to be the first antitrust lawsuit concerning Google’s use of AI.
