Summary
During its annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple revealed its new EnergyKit framework, which will allow developers to integrate energy data from HomeKit in iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 to help prioritise cheaper and more efficient energy usage.
Developers will be able to use the EnergyKit Guidance feature to create suggestions for devices to reduce energy use when prices are higher or when there is an abundance of clean energy available.
Apple’s new framework is currently designed to work with EV chargers and smart thermostats, with the potential for the data to be managed from within the Apple Home app.
This development could be a step towards making Apple Home a home energy management system, as the company looks to catch up with competitors like Samsung which has an AI Energy Mode and LG’s Homey platform.
Furthermore, Apple’s involvement in the Matter smart home standard, which recently expanded to include support for most major appliance types and energy-intensive devices, could aid the company’s ambitions in the smart home market.
