Popular design company Figma is rolling out a developer tool that will allow AI models to access specific data from Figma designs, rather than relying on visually analysing image files, to translate designs into coded applications.
The new protocol, called Dev Mode Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, is in beta mode, and will launch fully in the coming months with updates that include remote server capabilities and deeper codebase integrations.
The tool will give LLMs and agentic coding tools like Copilot in VS Code and Claude Code greater context regarding the creation of Figma designs, to make it easier for them to transform designs into reflecting accurately what the designers envisioned.
This could reduce the amount of LLM usage and lower the workload for AI coding tools.
