Summary
28 Days Later sequel 28 Years Later is set for release in June, having employed a number of filmmaking techniques to differentiate it from other horror films, including using 20 iPhones mounted on a special rig for certain scenes.
Director Danny Boyle, who also directed the original 28 Days Later, wanted to pay tribute to the 2002 film by using the closest modern-day equivalent to the digital video camcorder used then.
The iPhone’s mounting on specialised rigs allowed for more creative freedom when filming action and violent scenes, equating to a “poor man’s bullet time” according to Boyle, allowing shooting from a variety of perspectives.
The film was also shot in a wider aspect ratio than normal, meaning that viewers will have to scour the width of the screen, adding to thesense of suspense.
