Google is updating its Gmail email management system for Workspace users, with the addition of an AI-generated summary created automatically for lengthy or complex email threads and appearing at the top of the email.
The summary is intended to provide a quick overview of the key information in an email conversation, helping users to stay informed without having to read through the entire thread.
The feature is starting to roll out now for mobile users in English, but will not be available on desktop or for all users.
Also, the option to create a summary can still be requested by users, and the feature can be turned off by users if they prefer not to use it.
Google has not yet commented on any plans for expanding the automatic summary feature to all users. Gmail users will now see AI-powered summaries of their emails appear above the actual emails in a bid to help them to triage their inboxes more efficiently. Until now, the summarisation feature could be triggered manually, but now Google is releasing an AI model that will autonomously decide when a summary is needed for longer emails or threaded messages.
