Summary
The new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant in Georgia has started producing EVs and hybrids, including the Ioniq 5 and its upcoming three-row 9 model, helping protect the automaker from potential tariffs and hostile policies.
The $7.6bn factory is located on 3,000 acres of land and is tipped to produce 500,000 EVs and hybrids per year, dwarfing Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory, which has a capacity of 375,000.
It currently employs 1,340 workers, with this set to increase to 8,500, and will also see a 4bnbatteryplantbeginproductionnextyearinconjunctionwithLGEnergySolution,whileasecond5bn plant is underway with SK On.
The Ioniq 9 is scheduled to launch in 2026 and will offer 50% more cargo space than a Tesla Model X, with a choice of 215bhp or 422bhp powertrains, the latter good for 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds.
