Microsoft has announced that it is launching a new Windows Update orchestration platform, available in a private preview for developers, which will extend Windows Update to cover any type of app or driver update.
The platform is aimed at business apps but will be open to all developers.
So far, Windows Update has only been available for Microsoft’s own apps, drivers, and some management apps.
Developers will be able to schedule updates according to user activity, battery status and the use of sustainable energy, as well as utilise native Windows Update notifications and be added to the app update history.
Microsoft hopes the move will persuade businesses to update their apps independently using the platform thus providing a better user experience.
It remains to be seen whether major developers such as Adobe will move over to using the Windows Update system in the future.
