Amazon has decided to cancel its fantasy TV series The Wheel of Time, which is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Jordan (written by Brandon Sanderson upon Jordan’s death).
The show’s third season was its strongest yet, according to fans, however, Deadline reports the show’s production costs were too high for Amazon to continue despite the initial excitement at its release in 2021 when it became one of the streaming platform’s most-viewed shows.
Viewership numbers dwindled between seasons and Amazon has now decided to pull the plug.
When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in April, showrunner Rafe Judkins said he and his team chose Amazon as their production partner as the company was keen to invest in the show long-term.
He said: “There are not a lot of places doing that anymore […] For Wheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave.
