Details leak about Jony Ive’s new ‘screen-free’ OpenAI device

Former Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are collaborating on a mysterious new device that will be pocket-sized, contextually aware and screen-free, and is not eyewear or a phone, according to a leaked internal staff call reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The first device is expected to launch by late 2026, and while details have been closely guarded, Altman told staff it would be a “third core device” on top of a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, and would ship in greater numbers than any previous new product.
The device’s main purpose is to “own the unintended consequences” of the iPhone, according to Ive, who described the collaboration with Altman as “profound”.
OpenAI has publicly denied it is planning to develop a phone, despite consistent rumours.
