The signal messaging app has introduced an update to its Windows 11 version to prevent users from capturing screenshots of their secure chats using Microsoft’s Recall feature.
The move sees Signal employ Digital Rights Management (DRM) tools, commonly used by platforms such as Netflix to stop screen recording of content and mirror it to other devices.
DRM has accessibility usability issues and Signal has made it easy for users to switch off the feature, however, the developers have called on Microsoft to provide better options for developers to stop OS-level AI systems accessing sensitive information.
Signal had previously raised concerns about Microsoft’s Recall feature, a Photographic Memory tool that allows users to find information using an AI-powered archive.
The developers feel that Microsoft needs to provide better options to stop sensitive content being stored and accessed in this way and despite delays, Microsoft launched the Recall feature without providing an opt-out option for users.
