On 21 May, it was announced that artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI would purchase hardware startup Io in a $6.6bn deal.
Former Apple executive and industrial design chief Jonathan Ive’s team at Io will take over design for all of OpenAI.
However, it has been confirmed that Ive himself will not be joining the company, and his independent design firm LoveFrom will continue to operate separately.
The deal is set to see more than 55 engineers, software developers and manufacturing experts join OpenAI, with devices set to launch in 2026.
Project details are yet to be revealed, but the deal comes after rumours that the two companies have been working together for two years, considering products including headphones and cameras.
