Google has announced its new AI Mode which is a chatbot-style option within its Google Search platform, providing information and allowing users to ask follow-up questions, and its AI to synthesize information in ways that would not be found in a conventional web search.
Since the technology underpinning much of the current AI revolution came from Google, it seems fitting that the company is planning to focus much more heavily on AI search in the future.
Google made the announcement at its I/O developers’ conference, and also stated that it plans to roll out AI Mode to all US-based Google users, and to add further functionality.
Ultimately, Google’s goal is to produce a version of its search engine that offers a different interface and set of data every time a user performs a search.
This will give a far more flexible and personalised experience, but may raise questions about the future of web search and the publishers that currently rely on Google to send traffic to their websites.
