Summary
At its Build conference, Microsoft announced that it will soon be making its on-device AI models available to web apps through its Edge browser.
This will be made possible through a new set of APIs, which will provide web apps with prompt boxes and writing tools that utilise local AI models.
These APIs will be cross-platform, and will also be made available for use with other AI models.
In the next couple of months, Microsoft will also release a text translation API.
These APIs are intended to become potential web standards, and developers will be able to start testing them in the Edge Canary and Dev channels.
Google has already implemented similar APIs in its Chrome browser, which offer functions such as text translation and calendar event creation based on webpage content.
