Summary
Meta has revealed a prototype wristband that can interpret finger movements using electrical signals in the wrist, making it possible to control computers, smartphones or Meta’s AR and VR devices using hand gestures in the same way as depicted in the film Minority Report.
The device can interpret a range of gestures, such as pinching, swiping, tapping, and writing, with up to 90% accuracy, without the need for calibration.
It has been trained using data collected from more than 6,000 volunteers, and can be further improved with personalised data, boosting performance by 16% on average.
As well as being more precise and intuitive than existing interfaces, the device could also help people with paralysis or spinal cord injuries to interact with digital devices.
