The US could really use an affordable electric truck

Summary
Ford’s upcoming affordable electric truck could be what the EV market needs in the US, although whether the company can deliver is another matter.
The vehicle, expected to cost $30,000, is due to be released in 2027, by which time it is hoped Ford will have achieved cost savings through a new simplified manufacturing system and the use of lithium-iron phosphate cells, which are cheaper as they don’t contain nickel or cobalt.
However, the market currently faces challenges with falling sales, the Trump administration cutting EV tax credits and rules designed to push automakers towards zero-emission vehicles, plus tariffs on imported metals.
These issues have led to a decrease in expectations for EV uptake, with energy consultancy BNEF’s predictions for US EV sales in 2030 slashed from 48% to 27%.
