This startup wants to use the Earth as a massive battery

Summary
Texas start-up Quidnet Energy has successfully tested a new method of storing energy using water, which could provide electricity for up to six months, according to the firm’s CEO Joe Zhou.
The method involves pumping water into impermeable rock formations and keeping it under pressure, releasing it when needed.
Unlike lithium-ion batteries, Quidnet’s technology is based on existing, proven components, therefore it could be produced at scale quickly and inexpensively.
The only drawback is it is currently less efficient than lithium-ion batteries, although it has the potential to be cheaper and – importantly for an energy source with a long duration – useful for the grid.
