Chinese universities want students to use more AI, not less

Summary
While universities in the West view artificial intelligence (AI) as a threat to academic integrity that needs to be managed, Chinese campuses are using the technology as a skill that should be mastered, according to a Mycos Institute survey.
The cultural divide is also apparent in public sentiment, with 80% of Chinese respondents to a Stanford University survey saying they were excited by new AI services, compared with 35% in the US and 38% in the UK, and Chinese universities are now deploying local versions of DeepSeek on campus servers to support students.
There is also an increasing focus on formal AI literacy education in Chinese schools to help bridge an emerging digital divide between students, while the central government is pushing sweeping “AI+ education” reforms aimed at cultivating critical thinking and digital fluency.
