Trump’s AI Action Plan outlines how he will support the responsible development of AI technology in the US and also reprimand technology companies whose actions are limiting its potential.
The move is also a attack on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has been cracking down on AI companies that have mislead customers over their products, banning companies such as Rite Aid for misleading face recognition technology.
Trump plans to review FTC actions taken against AI companies to ensure they do not “unduly burden AI innovation”, and will withhold AI-related funding for states with “burdensome” regulations.
Leah Frazier, who previously served as an advisor to FTC Chair Lina Khan, said the move will likely result in fewer checks on the truthfulness and harm caused by AI technology going forward, which is “dangerous for the public”.
