Summary
The US Department of Energy has cancelled 3.7bnworthoffundingfor24cleanenergyprojects,including1.3bn that was to be spent on developing cleaner cement projects.
The cement industry is responsible for around 7% of all global greenhouse gas emissions, but is difficult to clean up due to its high emissions and the cost of introducing new emissions-reducing technology.
Among the projects affected is Sublime Systems, which had been developing a method of making cement using electricity, avoiding the high temperatures usually achieved by burning fossil fuels.
The company had received $87m in grants from the DOE to build a demonstration plant, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
Other projects affected include a carbon-neutral cement plant in Indiana and a facility making alumina, a critical US mineral.
