Google’s annual showcase for next-gen products, Google I/O, took place this week, and never before has AI been so prominent in the company’s product line-up.
Previous products and features, which have previously only been seen in Project Astra demonstrations, are being merged into a single chatbot, called Gemini, which offers a ‘universal AI assistant’ that can be used by anyone with a smartphone.
Google is also launching AI mode, a new LLM-powered front end to its search function that can draw personal information from Gmail andDocs to tailor search, and a Deep Search feature that breaks down queries into hundreds of individual searches.
CEO Sundar Pichai states this new functionality will bring ‘more intelligence everywhere’, turning AI into a ‘technology we won’t notice and may not even bother to name’.
