Tech giants such as Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Google want to utilise nuclear power to fuel their AI needs, but the time it would take to build new nuclear plants could hamper their plans.
The AI boom could increase data centre power demand by up to 165% by 2030, creating a need for more energy sources.
Major players such as Microsoft and Amazon are supporting next-generation nuclear technologies from startups to provide more efficient, smaller reactors.
Current nuclear reactors could be extended to provide energy in the short term, but most of those in operation are past their expiry dates.
Existing nuclear energy proposals will not be sufficient to meet the huge demand from the AI boom, meaning other energy sources will be relied on in the meantime.
