Can crowdsourced fact-checking curb misinformation on social media?
1 min read
Summary
Meta is replacing factcheckers on its Facebook, Instagram and Threads apps with Community Notes, a system that asks users to flag up false or misleading information and add context via notes.
It is hoped the system will be effective at tackling the spread of misinformation, as users are incentivised to self-police and flag up bad actors.
However, Community Notes will be less effective at tackling nuanced posts as it will rely on general user consensus rather than professional analysis.
To truly tackle false information posted on social media, a mix of strategies is needed, including human factcheckers, crowdsourcing and algorithmic filtering, according to metadata professor Preslav Nakov.
Each strategy is best suited to different types of content, and will need to work in tandem with each other to be effective, he concluded.
