Can AI help DOGE slash government budgets? It’s complex.

The Elon Musk-led Digital Operations Group EST (DOGE) is working with several US government departments to look for “waste, fraud and abuse” in federal spending, using AI to analyse huge datasets.
Reportedly, DOGE’s activities have included attempts to make $2tn in cuts to the federal budget and end US Aid programmes, as well as halting Treasury access for the group being ordered by a federal judge.
The Government Accountability Office has found that six federal programs account for $200 bninim p ro p er p a y m e n t se a c h ye a r, w i t h M e d i c a re an d M e d i c ai d res p o n s ib l e f or n e a r l y 14$ 233bn and $521bn per year.
Healthcare fraud is most commonly committed by pharmaceutical companies, often through “off-label promotion”
Current governmental deterrents to fraudulent payments are ineffective, so AI could be used to establish predictive models which stop payments before they even occur, as opposed to chasing them up after the fact.
