Summary
Built into the Google TV operating system on Chromecast and some smart TVs is an “Apps Only Mode” which strips away most of the home screen to provide a quicker, less distracting interface.
Rather than rows of thumbnails and personalised recommendations, the only apps installed on the device are shown.
This can improve load times and navigation, as it no longer needs to load multiple recommendation rows or promotional banners.
To enable this on Chromecast or a smart TV running Google TV, the user needs to go to Settings, Accounts and profile, their profile, and turn on Apps Only Mode.
However, this mode disables voice commands, introduces the need to install apps via smartphone or browser, and removes access to recommended content and live channels, meaning it is not suitable for all users.
