Summary

  • Temp files are those created by software, updates or browsing the internet and can often be the cause of a slowing down of the performance of a laptop or PC.
  • They are generally used by programs to store temporary data when performing a task and can consume a lot of space if not deleted.
  • Windows has a built in Disk Cleanup tool which can remove temporary files, Windows Update files and thumbnails amongst other things and it won’t delete those files in use by open applications.
  • It can be set to clean up files on a regular basis using a feature called Storage Sense which can be accessed via the Settings menu.
