One of the headline features of Material 3 Expressive is wallpaper effects, which allow users to customise their phone’s home and lock screen wallpapers in new ways.
So far, this release has three options for wallpaper effects — Shape Effect, Weather Effect and Cinematic Effect.
Shape Effect allows users to isolate the main subject of a photo by cutting it out and framing it in a specific shape on the user’s home screen or lock screen.
Similarly, Weather Effect allows users to apply weather effects, such as rain or fog, to their home screen wallpaper, either manually or dynamically depending on the weather in the local area.
Android 16 is slated for full release later this month, although some features, such as Weather and Shape wallpaper effects, are only available on Pixel phones at this stage.
