Clean Out These Temporary Windows Folders Today to Reclaim Gigabytes
1 min read
Summary
Temporary files, known as cache files, are stored on Windows computers to enable smooth running of the machine and optimisation of various processes, such as installation, updates and crashes.
However, these files accumulate over time and eat up storage space.
There are three temp folders which users should delete to free up space: User Temp Folder (%temp%), System Temp Folder, and Software Distribution Folder.
The User Temp Folder stores leftover temporary files from apps, background processes and Windows; these are cleared by pressing Win + R, followed by %temp%, and deleting the files (those in use should be ignored).
The System Temp Folder is used by the operating system and holds leftover files; to delete these, open the Run dialog, type temp, and hit Enter (admin rights may be needed to delete some files).
The Software Distribution Folder contains update files, which can be cleared by navigating to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download in File Explorer and deleting the contents (ensure all Windows updates are installed first).
The Recycle Bin and Windows.old Folder are two further areas of storage that pile up with junk and can be cleared to free up space.
