Seeing a Gray Screen in Google Chrome? Here’s How to Fix It
1 min read
Summary
A grey screen is currently being experienced by a number of Google Chrome users after they have updated the browser to version 139.
This is due to a rendering bug which means the browser’s GPU-backend graphics stack occasionally fails to draw pages.
Google Chrome is generally known for its hardware acceleration, but this can be switched off as a quick fix.
This can be done by right-clicking the Google Chrome icon, selecting Properties and targeting —disable-gpu.
This will, however, affect the browser’s performance.
A better option is to find the chrome://flags page, search for “angle” and select Default (or D3D11) as the value for the Choose ANGLE graphics backend flag.
After users have restarted Chrome, they can remove the —disable-gpu flag in the Properties menu.
