Summary
- In an effort to “increase security”, Google’s Manifest V3 has effectively disrupted the operations of many ad-blockers, particularly uBlock Origin.
- As of July this year, Google will phase out the previous version of its extension framework, Manifest V2, which had provided unlimited access.
- As a result, third-party developers will need to update their extensions for them to continue working on Chrome.
- However, there are a number of flags that still need to be enabled on Chrome for uBlock Origin to operate optimally.
- This includes enabling Temporarily unexpired M137 and M138 flags, and Allow legacy extension manifest versions.
- Furthermore, there needs to be disabled settings for Extension Manifest V2 Deprecation Warning Stage, Extension Manifest V2 Deprecation Disabled Stage, and Extension Manifest V2 Deprecation Unsupported Stage.
- Even then, Google is working towards completely doing away with these flags, so the future of even this workaround is uncertain.
- The best alternative currently is to use Firefox, where uBlock Origin is still functional.
