Summary
Microsoft has released a new open-source command-line interface (CLI) text editor, Microsoft Edit, on GitHub for Windows 10 and 11 users, with two installation options available.
The editor, which is just 250KB in size, boasts a minimalist design, and serves as a replacement for many of Notepad’s text-editing functions, allowing users to edit batch scripts within command-line interpreters like PowerShell and Command Prompt.
Other functionality includes modeless editing of config files, with the ability to adjust parameters such as resolution or frame rate, and the option to launch directly in a folder path of choice.
The release comes as Microsoft announced the general availability of its Open Source Alternative License Review Model (ALRM), which enables organisations to vet and contribute to open source projects based on their specific legal and organizational requirements.
