Pro basketball player and 4 youths arrested in connection to ransomware crimes

French authorities arrested Daniil Kasatkin at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport on 21 June at the request of US authorities.
The former professional basketball player is alleged to have acted as a negotiator for a cybercriminal group allegedly responsible for approximately 900 breaches.
Five individuals have been detained in total, including threedevelopers of Conti, a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operation that has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks, including the targeted harrowing of the Irish healthcare system earlier this year.
The RaaS operation has been linked to Russo-Ukrainian co-operation.
The developers have each been charged with causing damage to computer systems and faces a maximum of five years in prison if found guilty.
