Record DDoS pummels site with once-unimaginable 7.3Tbps of junk traffic

Summary
A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack measured at 7.3Tbps was reported by internet services provider Cloudflare.
The attack was aimed at a Cloudflare customer and involved carpets bombing nearly 22,000 destination ports of a single IP address, sending 37.4TB of junk traffic.
This attack was made possible by using User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which is frequently used in time-sensitive applications such as gaming and video playback.
The protocol allows data to be transferred without a connection being formally established first, which also allows attackers to inundate servers with traffic without first getting permission.
This is the latest in a series of record-breaking DDoS attacks according to Cloudflare, which noted in July that it had mitigated what was at the time the largest attack ever recorded.
