Summary
Sixteen Russian hackers have been indicted by the US Department of Justice for their part in the global malware attack known as DanaBot.
The hackers, two of whom were based in Novosibirsk, allegedly developed and ran a botnet which infected at least 300,000 machines worldwide.
The charges relate to offences committed between 2018 and 2020, during which the DanaBot malware was used to carry out a wide range of criminal activities, including attempts to steal money and cryptocurrency, and acting as a launchpad for other forms of malware such as ransomware.
The DOJ, alongside the Pentagon, carried out a global takedown of the hackers’ infrastructure, seizing servers and disrupting the network.
This is the latest in a series of actions against Russian hackers and cybercrime groups over the past six months.
