Cath Virginia is a designer for The Verge and when asked what her favourite gadget was, she chose her Brother 1034D Serger.
A serger, or overlocker, is a type of sewing machine used in garment making, that uses two needles and up to four strands of thread to create loops and finished edges Onthe inside of most knitwear.
It also has a knife that cuts the fabric edge for a clean finish on garments.
Virginia bought the Brother 1034D Serger in March as a birthday and tax return present and chose it because it was easy to thread and could sew multiple layers of fabric at a time.
So far, she has used it to hem shirts, make a skirt and a crop top and it has a differential feed to sew wobbly knitted seams and create lettuce hems.
The only downside is that it cannot do a two-thread coverstitch, which requires a separate machine.
