Securing Remote Teams with IP Address Controls in Work Tools
1 min read
Summary
An IP address is a unique identifier for a computer or other device on the internet, and can be thought of in the same way as a postal address for communication and sending data.
They are particularly important for remote teams as they offer the opportunity for managers to control and monitor where users are logging in from, therefore tightening security.
There are two types of IP addresses, static and dynamic, the former staying the same every time a user connects and the latter changing periodically, with the majority of home Wi-Fi networks using this type.
There are a number of security risks that can be mitigated by the use of IP controls, such as ex-employee access, suspicious foreign logins, and shared login credentials.
Workast, a collaboration tool, does not have built-in IP filtering, however, it does integrate with Slack and Google Workspace, which do have these controls, therefore, giving users an extra layer of security.
Slack has “Allowed IP Ranges” which can be found under the Security Settings tab, and Google Workspace has Context-Aware Access, which can be enabled in the Admin Console.
