Unit 42, Palo Alto Networks’ threat intelligence team, consists of threat researchers, malware analysts, and security experts who proactively discover, analyse and contextualise sophisticated cyber threats to help protect the company’s products and the wider IT community.
During a 12-week internship, two Unit 42 interns, Gabrielle Calderon and Sakthi Vinayak, worked alongside professionals on three major projects that enabled them to gain a deeper understanding of the constantly evolving cybersecurity landscape.
Calderon, a malware reverse engineering intern, focused on analysing malware tickets to assess the level of response required and creating a tool to automate the identification of malware families and extraction of indicators of compromise.
Vinayak, a threat research intern, worked on automating data ingestion and enrichment processes to allow for more in-depth research and analysis.
Both interns praised the culture of support and growth within the team, saying it had strengthened their understanding of threat intelligence and exposed them to a variety of new technologies.
