The First Federal Cybersecurity Disaster of Trump 2.0 Has Arrived
1 min read
Summary
A cyber attack on the US federal judiciary’s electronic case filing system has compromised sealed court records, and may have exposed the identities of informants and witnesses.
It is still unclear what data and systems were affected, or the extent of the breach; more than a month after the Department of Justice first detected the “intrusion”, no full accounting is yet available.
It has been suggested that multiple parties may have been involved in the attack, including espionage actors backed by other nations, and possible organised crime groups.
It appears that the hackers exploited software vulnerabilities that had not been addressed since they were first identified in 2020; despite recommendations post-2021, flaws appear not to have been fixed.
