Summary

  • This week, US intelligence agencies have planned to contract private data brokers to gather personal data on Americans in an unlawful move that could “facilitate blackmail, stalking, harassment, and public shaming”, according to reports. -Federal law makers attempted to ban such buys last year with the “Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act”, however the bill was rejected.
  • Data bought by intelligence agencies could allow US enemies to monitor the movements of military personnel, including those near sensitive areas housing nuclear arms.
  • In other news, former employees of Russian security firm Kaspersky have confirmed that Careto, a sophisticated hacking group was operating on behalf of the Spanish government, targeting European energy companies, research institutions and activists, particularly those in Cuba.
  • Careto’s campaign particularly focused on Cuba, which had provided refuge to members of the Spanish separatist group designated as terrorists by several European countries.
  • Microsoft’s Recall feature, a constant screenshots feature for Windows users, has been slammed as a privacy risk by encrypted messaging app Signal, which has blocked the feature on its app.
  • The feature will be required for some government and corporate users, removing any promise of privacy for Signal users.
