Summary
Sixteen individuals have been charged over their involvement with malware operation DanaBot, which has been linked to a range of activities from ransomware attacks, to cyberattacks against Ukraine during its war with Russia, and espionage against government bodies.
The US Department of Justice said the individuals were all based in Russia and infected at least 300,000 machines globally.
The department said the operation had been a “juggernaut of the e-crime landscape”, which had also been used by Russia-based hackers with links to the government.
The disruption of DanaBot, which had been operating since 2018, has been welcomed by cybersecurity analysts.
“The more we disrupt them, the more we keep them on their back heels”, said one.
