Andrew Zonenberg, an open-source developer, has provided an update on his project to create a high-speed Ethernet switch, which has been in development since 2012.
The design now includes a variety of components, including some XCKU5P FPGAs that Andrew was able to obtain cheaply, influencing the project’s direction.
When he refers to himself as an ‘experienced RTL engineer’, he is referring to Register-Transfer Level, a hardware description language used in FPGA programming.
Open-source hardware can often require costly components, with high speeds remaining expensive and largely proprietary.
However, Zonenberg’s work demonstrates the potential for affordable, open-fast-speed Ethernet technology, and interested parties should stay tuned for further developments.
