Peeking at Poking Health Tech: the G7 and the Libre 3
1 min read
Summary
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are valuable tools for those living with diabetes, providing data-rich trendlines to help inform dietary decisions and obviating the need for finger-stabbing to check blood glucose levels.
Two of the most popular CGMs are the Abbott Libre 3 and the Dexcom G7, which are compared in the video linked in this Hackaday article.
The applicators for both devices are spring-loaded for use on the upper arm, but the design aesthetics and user interfaces differ.
The Libre 3 is simpler, consisting of two plastic disks containing the electronics, while the G7 has a more robust over-molded shell and requires a button push to engage, adding a clumsy step to the otherwise simple “poke-and-go” design.
The G7 does outperform the Libre 3 in that its ten-day life can withstand deeper submersion in water.
