Chinese tech companies are backing a new digital video interface known as GPMI, which promises to offer a much higher data rate than existing HDMI.
GPMI’s developers say the standard will deliver “tremendously higher” data rates, as well as power delivery “well exceeding” that of USB-C, and bi-directional data transfer.
Some have suggested that the new standard will pave the way for 8K video content, although others have questioned the practicality of continually exceeding resolutions beyond the level of human sight.
Nevertheless, there is demand for higher-bandwidth interfaces, and it is hoped that GPMI-compatible hardware will merely enhance, rather than replace, existing technologies such as DisplayPort over USB-C, allowing for a seamless transition.
Reactions to the new standard have been mixed, with some praising it as progress and others disappointed that it is merely a resolution upgrade for content that is largely considered to be sub-par.
